I am looking for a General Midi compatible (128 instruments + drum kit) decent quality soundfont file 'sf2'. Originally I asked for someone to help make VST instruments, however I realize VST instruments might be tough to make. Mount cd-rom windows xp.
But what I can do is implement a good soundfont that I can distribute with our. Here are some candidates, and I will contact the owner of these soundfonts once we come to a general consensus on which soundfont might be best:. What do you guys think? Are there any other candidates? I had to look that one up, but I could put in some retro sounds, that might be neat! I've been demoing some soundfonts, and none of them seem that great for orchestra works.
I think what I may end up doing is shipping the product with one of the above soundfonts, or multiple depending on the size of the soundfont (with the permission of the creator). But I think VST is the way to go, and I am going to look into integrating VST support with the product. The only thing I can't do is ship with VST sounds since I won't have the rights, and MakeMusic bought Garritan, so Personal Orchestra is out of the question!
If you're on windows, SDL is probably using the Windows midi synth (and from your YT videos it does sound like that's the case), which does use variants of the original SC55 samples. In the Doom Retro thread, you perhaps could try those.
I found though that the bigger ones had percussion that uh, I think I currently use the 25MB one. Its a bit nicer, but the percussion still tends to get a little annoying and its not entirely what I'm used to. I guess that's the curse of MIDI music.
EDIT: Hmm, pop the 25MB one into PRBoom+ and DRUNNIN sounds incredibly weird now. I guess I gotta keep searching further (and some later songs also sound pretty bad, so yeah I guess I gotta keep on trying. There was one I used to like, but out of the blue, something happened on my computer and suddenly songs like GRABBAG got pitched up horridly) EDIT2: I've given all of these a spin, and frankly none sound like what you get right out of windows, so eh. I don't know if they're more correct or not, but they're just not what I'm used to so hmm. Maybe googling around would turn up something more worthwhile, I'm really not getting anything that sounds remotely like what I'm used to from that big pile of SC55 soundfonts.
I can't figure this out. I am using short circuit as the vsti and a gm sf2 as the soundfont to be played. I can't get any sound out of the vsti when triggering it with a previously created midi file. I determined that if the midi notes were on a channel other than channel 1, they do not play. I previously sequenced these midi files in an old version of cakewalk and put each midi instrument on a separate midi channel, drums on channel 10, of course. This isn't really a problem for most tracks as they get split up when importing and I just set the channel to midi channel 1 for each track. However, this will not work for the drums, of course, which need to go out to channel 10.
I can't figure out if this is a configuration issue, or if short circuit or the gm sf2 itself are limited. Any help would be appreciated. Ok, I've made a little progress. I learned that I need to set the midi channel with the shortcircuit vsti prior to loading in an instrument. Typically, in the past (in Cakewalk), I select the first instrument (piano), set to channel 10 and get drums. I am now getting sounds for channels other than channel 1, but just piano sounds, no drums - either channel 10 or channel 16. I am using synthgms.sf2.
It would seem maybe this is a limitation of it? I donĀ“t know shortcircuit well but i assume it only loads one instrument from the soundfont at a time, not the whole GM set (which defaults midi channel 10 to drums). So i assume you need to tell shortcircuit to load the drums only and it will then play them on all midi channels.
Hope that helps somehow. I can't figure this out. I am using short circuit as the vsti and a gm sf2 as the soundfont to be played. First, thanks so much for the reply. If you load that general midi soundfont through short circuit, you will note that there is not a drums instrument if you srcoll through the instruments when attempting to load. Typically, in cakewalk I would load the first instrument, a piano, and set the channel to 10 and would get various drum sounds for various piano notes. Problems ing files gmail.
It could be it is an issue with shortcircuit, I don't know. I am going to try another vsti. Will also try another general midi soundfont. My son is also looking at it. I will post the solution if we figure it out. And you are right - only one instrument per instance of short circuit as far as I can tell.
Hello everyone! Ladies and Gentleman - I hereby present you the CompiFont, which basically is a compilation of many, MANY soundfonts into one - GM bank.
Short history of the font. I have seen CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth a while ago (I wonder if it was a year ago or more) and i felt kinda nostalgic about all the MIDI. But I also realised that all the GM soundfonts just doesn't seem to fit my ear. I decided to create my own GM.SF2.
Something made out of precisely picked out samples out of every single SF2 file that I will stumble upon. I've made some research on how to make one, found out a program to do it Viena by Synthfont, many thanks for that. And spent quite some time on it. Tributes What does it comprise? The list is really, really long.
Out of the GM soundfonts used during creation were 'Merlin Gold' (Merlin Pixel Arts), 'Titanic 200 GM GS' (Congrats Luke Sena!), 'Personal Copy' (Jim Roe), but also many more for reference like 'Masterpiece' (found on ), DrummGS, Joe's Best GM, Hubbe64. Even good old Gravis Ultrasound was listened to! And 'some' samples as well, which list is incomprehensibly long, and i don't remember all the ones used. There are some certainly worth acknowledging. PIANO: Yamaha 9ft Grand, Grand Piano Y-LP1, Clavinova P6 and Yamaha C5 used alltogether and tuned for the best performance as well as some piano instruments of unidentified origin (sorry for all the people that worked hard on all those samples, i simply lost track.
The misc piano instruments came out of E-MU Proteus 2000 samples package with minor/major tweaks GUITARS: Enormous FG460s II Live Guitar Pack (complete recommendation!), Kamac Distortion Guitar and 'Overdrive Guitar' the changes were major here and included samples swapping, Narubasso. Sf2?, LesPaul guitars pack, Jackson Distortion Guitar. WINDS: UoI Trumpet NV4, Trombone from Merlin, Tuba, Custom(ly) made Trumpet Muted, French Horns from Merlin and French Horns sf2's, Tweaked 'Flute (TB)', Ethan's Bassoon, CLARINET, Piccolo CK. STRINGS: Cadenza Double Bass, Grand Strings ST, Solo Viola, Super PizzStr and for the 'All around strings' comprised Violas soundfonts, 'STRING ENSEMBLE11', contrabass soundfont, 'String Section3', 'PC88 Marcato Strings' as well as 'Marce strings', violins from Merlin and more.

DRUMS: Walthius, Melotti Drums, JDDrums and Drumkits made from Royalty free Wave samples I have to make it much, much better i guess Download: Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2f1uqbzbsmlkx5/CompiFont.sf2?dl=0.
